Madikeri: Residents of Kodagu district will soon be able to apply for passports locally as a three-day Passport Mela is set to be organised from April 8 to April 10. The initiative has been arranged following a request made by Mysuru–Kodagu Lok Sabha MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar to the Ministry of External Affairs.
According to officials, the Bengaluru Regional Passport Office has agreed to organise the special passport camp in Kodagu district to help residents complete passport-related procedures without travelling long distances. The programme will be held for three days starting April 8, and the MP has been requested to inaugurate the mela on the opening day.
MP Yaduveer Wadiyar said several residents from Kodagu had approached him seeking assistance in organising a passport mela in the district. At present, applicants from Kodagu usually have to travel to Mysuru or Bengaluru to complete passport-related formalities, which often causes inconvenience, particularly for senior citizens and those living in remote areas.
He said that based on these requests, he had written to the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs in February, urging them to organise a passport mela in Kodagu to ease the difficulties faced by the public.
The MP also said that during his recent visit to New Delhi, he met Sripriya Ranganathan, Secretary (Consular, Passport and Visa, and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and personally submitted a request to organise the mela in Kodagu district.
Responding to the request, senior officials of the Ministry directed the Bengaluru Regional Passport Office to take necessary steps to organise the event.
The passport mela will allow residents to submit applications and complete related procedures locally, reducing the need to travel outside the district.
MP Yaduveer Wadiyar urged citizens of Kodagu district to make use of the opportunity and apply for passports during the mela.
