Kodava Heritage Shines at ‘Kodava Balya Namme’ in Ammathi

Ammathi: A two-day cultural festival, Kodava Balya Namme, celebrating the rich heritage of Kodava folk music and dance, was inaugurated by Virajpet MLA A.S. Ponnanna at the Kodava Samaja premises in Ammathi on March 29. The festival, organised by the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, showcased traditional performances, competitions, and a vibrant display of Kodava customs.
Speaking at the event, MLA Ponnanna highlighted the ancient history of Kodava language and literature, stressing that it is a collective responsibility to nurture and preserve them. He commended the Kodava Sahitya Academy for organising various programmes aimed not only at the development of Kodava literature but also at safeguarding the community’s cultural heritage. He urged the Academy to continue its efforts to promote the language and support the growth of the community.

The festival commenced with a colourful procession featuring traditional Kodava attire, accompanied by vaalaga and dudikott music. The parade set the tone for a weekend filled with cultural festivities and enthusiastic participation from the community.
As part of Kodava Balya Namme, a variety of cultural competitions, including folk singing and dancing, were held, attracting talented participants from across the region. The event witnessed an overwhelming response from the community, reinforcing the importance of preserving and celebrating Kodava traditions.
Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy President Ajjinikanda Mahesh Nachaiah and other dignitaries graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of such initiatives in strengthening the Kodava identity.
