First-Ever Organ Donation at Kodagu District Hospital Gives Hope to Many Patients

Madikeri: In a landmark moment for healthcare in Kodagu district, the first-ever organ donation procedure was successfully carried out at the district hospital, offering a new lease of life to several patients awaiting transplants.


The donor, P.G. Dalu, a 46-year-old resident of Aravathoklu village in Ponnampet taluk, was declared brain dead following critical health complications. Despite their grief, his family took the courageous and humanitarian decision to donate his organs, enabling multiple patients to benefit from life-saving transplants.

According to officials, a specialised medical team from Mysuru retrieved the donor’s kidneys, eyes, heart valves and other organs in accordance with medical protocols. The organs were later transported to JSS Hospital and Narayana Health for transplantation procedures.


Kodagu Medical College Dean Dr. Lokesh, along with surgeons Dr. Somashekhar and Dr. Nanjundaswamy, said the successful completion of the process marked a significant milestone for the district hospital and highlighted the growing capabilities of the medical institution.

The Health Department and the medical team of Kodagu Institute of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital praised the donor’s family for their noble and selfless act during a difficult time.


Doctors also urged the public to create awareness about organ donation and discuss the subject with their families. They said more people coming forward for organ donation could help save numerous lives and provide hope to patients suffering from organ failure.
