Madikeri: In a recent Tourism Development Committee meeting held in Madikeri, homestay owners in Kodagu urged the district administration to classify their electricity usage under residential rates rather than commercial.
The meeting, chaired by Madikeri MLA Mantar Gowda, saw members of the Homestay Association emphasizing that homestays are low-budget lodging options within homes, not commercial hotels, and thus should not be subject to commercial electricity tariffs.
Homestay Association representatives argued that the current commercial electricity rates impose a financial burden on them, making it difficult to sustain their operations. They stressed the need for a fairer billing system that reflects the true nature of their businesses.
In response, officials from the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) stated they are adhering to government policies. “As per the government’s tourism policy, we have been charging homestays under commercial electricity usage,” explained CESC Engineer Anita Bai.
Addressing the concerns, MLA Mantar Gowda assured the homestay owners that he would discuss the issue with the minister and senior officials to seek a resolution.
