Pepper Prices Surge in Kodagu and Karnataka: Here’s Why

In Kodagu, the price varied between ₹680 to ₹695 across different locations in the district.

Madikeri: Pepper prices in Kodagu and Karnataka have seen a significant surge, delighting local farmers and traders. In January, the price of pepper ranged between ₹500 to ₹520 per kilogram. However, as of now, it has soared to ₹700 per kilogram. On Wednesday, reports indicated that the prices in major markets such as Kochi, Saklespura, and Chikkamagaluru were pegged at ₹700 per kilogram. In Kodagu, the price varied between ₹680 to ₹695 across different locations in the district.

This price hike brings back memories of 2018 when pepper prices hit an all-time high of ₹800 per kilogram. The current surge can be attributed to tight supplies and an increase in industrial demand, particularly from masala manufacturers. Climate issues have affected pepper production in Kerala, one of the key producing states, but the overall outlook remains optimistic. Increased cultivation in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has helped mitigate some of the supply shortages, supporting the price surge.

Local farmers in Kodagu are optimistic about the price trends, hoping that the upward trajectory will continue, benefiting their livelihood. The increased prices come as a relief after years of fluctuating and often low market rates. For the local economy, which is heavily reliant on agriculture, particularly coffee and pepper cultivation, this surge is a much-needed boost.
