Kodagu, Mysuru& Bengaluru: In a joyous commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa (Kodandera Madappa Cariappa), various organizations across Kodagu, Bengaluru, and Mysuru came together to pay tribute to the distinguished military leader on January 28.
The Kodava Samaja in Bengaluru took the lead by organizing a Cultural Day event in honor of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa at the Kodava Samaja Bengaluru.
The festivities continued with a special function held at the Haradasa Appaneravanda Appacha Kavi Hall of Kodava Samaja Bengaluru, starting at 6:00 pm on Sunday. Participants gathered to celebrate the legacy of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, reflecting on his remarkable contributions to the nation.
Gonikoppal witnessed the birthday celebration of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa at the Cariappa Memorial near Cauvery College. The occasion was marked by various activities and events, underscoring the significance of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa's enduring impact on the community and the country.
In Mysuru, the 125th birth anniversary was observed with the offering of floral tributes to the statue of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa at the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Circle on JLB Road. The morning ceremony attracted participants from different walks of life, demonstrating the widespread respect for the first Field Marshal of India.
This grand celebration was organized collaboratively by the Kodava Samaja, Mysuru, the Kodava Samaja Cultural and Sports Club, Mysuru, and the Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa Fans Club, Mysuru.
Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa, the inaugural Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, played a pivotal role in guiding the Indian military through the shift from a colonial force to an independent nation. His enduring legacy continues to be revered today. During his leadership, the Indian armed forces demonstrated exceptional prowess, navigating a crucial period of transition and laying the foundation for a competent and capable military establishment.

Born on January 28, 1899, in Shanivarsanthe, within the Coorg Province (now Kodagu district) of Karnataka, Field Marshal Cariappa hailed from a family of farmers belonging to the Kodava clan. His father, Madappa, served in the revenue department, and Cariappa was the second among four sons and two daughters in the family.
Fondly known as "Chimma" among his relatives, Cariappa completed his early education at the Central High School in Madikeri in 1917. Subsequently, he pursued further studies at Presidency College in Chennai. It was during his college years that he learned about the recruitment of Indians into the Army, with training to be conducted within the country. Driven by a desire to serve as a soldier, he applied for this training opportunity.
Out of 70 applicants, Cariappa was among the 42 individuals selected for admission into the Daly Cadet College in Indore. Excelling in all aspects of his training, he graduated seventh in his class, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would eventually lead him to become the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
