Madikeri: Kodagu witnessed a solemn observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day as the Codava National Council (CNC) paid heartfelt tributes to the victims of historical tragedies that scarred the Codava tribe.

On January 27, 2024, CNC organized ceremonies at poignant locations, including Naal Naad Aramane of Yevakapaadi in Paadinaad, Madikeri Fort Premises, and the Devattparamb Genocide Memorial site. The remembrance encapsulated three significant tragedies: political assassinations at Madikeri Fort by the 'Keladhi/Paleri' rulers, inhuman executions of Codava Tribal Race members in Naalnaad Aramane, and the Devaattparamb genocide.

The atrocities endured by Codava subjects, spanning rape, murder, and political assassinations, were recalled at the Madikeri Fort and Naalnaad Aramane, testifying to the brutalities during the Keladhi/Paaleri dynasty's reign from 1633 to 1834, according to CNC.

The commemoration extended to the Devattparamb Codava genocide, which unfolded 238 years ago, CNC stated in a release. CNC Supremo N U Naachappa Codava led a floral ritual, symbolizing a solemn remembrance of the victims. The Codava community urged the United Nations to include these tragic events in the International Holocaust Remembrance list and proposed the establishment of memorial monuments at Madikeri Fort, Naalnaad Aramane, and the international Devattparamb site.

The ceremonies emphasized the importance of passing on the memory of these genocides from generation to generation, ensuring that the traumatic chapter in Codava racial history is never forgotten. Additionally, CNC condemned the glorification of Keladhi/Paaleri Rajas and Tipu, asserting that such acts are punishable under the law in a Constitutional Parliamentary Democracy.
