Reckless driving by Kerala-registered vehicles raises alarms on safety concerns in Kodagu

The collision left the electric pole shattered, leaving it precariously balanced on the support of the wires and subsequently disconnecting electricity in the area.

Ponnampet: In a harrowing incident, a car from the state of Kerala careened into an 11 KV power line in Ponnampet, in South Kodagu resulting in severe damage to both the vehicle and the electric infrastructure. The collision left the electric pole shattered, leaving it precariously balanced on the support of the wires and subsequently disconnecting electricity in the area.

Two occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries as they were not wearing seat belts, preventing the airbags from deploying. Meanwhile, the passenger in the car removed the vehicle's number plate in an attempt to maintain anonymity.

Local residents have raised concerns over the escalating recklessness of Kerala-registered vehicles in Kodagu, particularly in areas like Ponnampet, Virajpet, and Gonikoppal. Residents said that these vehicles not only drive at high speeds but also flout traffic rules, endangering both themselves and others on the road.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for increased vigilance and enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure the safety of residents in Kodagu. Authorities are urged to address the growing issue of reckless driving by out-of-state vehicles and implement measures to curb such incidents in the future. The damaged power line is currently being repaired, with efforts underway to restore electricity to the affected areas in Ponnampet.
