Siddapura (Kodagu district): The Forest Department on Friday captured a wild elephant at Chenneyyanakote Badaga Banangala, a day after a coffee grower was killed in a suspected elephant attack in the region.

According to officials, Chowrira Ganapathi, a coffee planter, was killed by a wild elephant at Guhya on Thursday. Following the incident, forest personnel tracked the animal and kept it under close surveillance before launching an operation to capture it.

Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Jagannath said the elephant was captured at Hundi, about 14 km from the attack site. The operation involved more than 110 forest personnel and five trained kumki elephants. The lone male elephant, estimated to be around 32–34 years old, was tranquilised using a dart before being secured by the team.

Meanwhile, tensions flared in the region as activists of the BJP staged a protest in front of the Forest Department office, accusing officials and elected representatives of failing to control the rising human–wildlife conflict in Kodagu.

The protesters marched to the office, raised slogans against the government and forest officials, and demanded that Chief Conservator of Forests (Kodagu Circle) Sonal Vrishni meet them. Police had barricaded the entrance, but some protesters attempted to enter the premises and were pushed back by security personnel.

Later, the agitators blocked the national highway, leading to traffic congestion on the Madikeri–Kushalnagar road.
