Kakkabe: The annual harvest festival of Kodagu, Puthari, will be celebrated on December 4, coinciding with the Rohini Nakshatra, following a decision taken at the Paadi Sri Igguthappa Temple in Kakkabe. The festival, one of the most important cultural traditions of the region, marks the ceremonial first harvest of paddy, the district’s staple crop.
Puthari is observed during the Kodava month of Birchiyar, which corresponds to November–December in the Gregorian calendar. On November 19, representatives from 13 families and office-bearers of the temple met to finalise the date and timings. The schedule was set based on traditional Kodava calendars and astrological guidance from astrologers in Ammangeri.
As per the finalised timings for the public, the Nere kattuva ritual will begin at 8:40 PM, followed by the reaping of the season’s first paddy at 9:40 PM. The auspicious time for the community feast is fixed for 10:40 PM.
At the Paadi Sri Igguthappa Temple, the rituals will commence earlier. The Nere kattuva ceremony is scheduled for 8:10 PM, the reaping of the first paddy at 9:10 PM, and the dinner muhurat at 10:10 PM.
