Karnataka Congress President Hariprasad Calls for Kodava’s Inclusion in Eighth Schedule After Tulu Recognition

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government should take steps to secure constitutional recognition for Kodava along with Tulu, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee(KPCC) president B.K. Hariprasad said on Saturday, following the State Cabinet’s decision to grant Tulu the status of the second additional official language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

Welcoming the Cabinet decision, Hariprasad said the State government should now pass a resolution in both Houses of the Karnataka Legislature and forward it to the Centre seeking the inclusion of Tulu and Kodava in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

“The government should now pass a resolution in both Houses to send it to the Centre for including Tulu and Kodava in the Eighth Schedule,” Hariprasad told reporters. He also expressed happiness over the recognition accorded to Tulu, which he identified as his mother tongue.

The demand for constitutional recognition of Kodava is not new. A private member’s Bill introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Hariprasad had previously sought the inclusion of both Kodava and Tulu in the Eighth Schedule, citing their linguistic and cultural heritage and long-standing demands for recognition.

The Eighth Schedule currently contains 22 languages, including Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Konkani; Kodava and Tulu are not among them.
