Bengaluru: Madikeri MLA Dr. Mantar Gowda, along with members of the Shri Omkareshwara Temple Administration Committee, met Karnataka Muzrai and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday to discuss the temple’s development. The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the Muzrai Department.
During the discussions, Dr. Gowda requested the Minister to extend full cooperation for the comprehensive development of the centuries-old shrine. Built in 1820 by Kodagu rulers, the Omkareshwara Temple is an iconic landmark of Madikeri, drawing devotees and tourists alike for its unique blend of Islamic and Gothic architectural styles. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, stands out with its central dome, four turrets, and serene pond that adds to its spiritual and heritage value.
Responding to the appeal, Ramalinga Reddy directed officials to prepare and submit a detailed project report (DPR) outlining measures for the temple’s improvement and preservation.
Just a short distance from Madikeri Fort stands the Omkareshwara Temple. The temple was commissioned by King Lingarajendra II in the early 19th century. According to local accounts, the king had accidentally caused the death of an innocent man during his campaign of territorial expansion. Plagued by guilt and tormented by nightmares, he sought the guidance of the royal priests, who advised him to construct a temple as an act of atonement. Thus, the Omkareshwara Temple came into being.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple stands out for its unusual blend of Gothic and Islamic influences. A large water tank with a mantap at its centre adds to the temple’s charm. Unlike most traditional Hindu temples, the Omkareshwara Temple does not feature pillared halls, giving it a distinctive identity among the region’s sacred sites.
