Codava National Council to Host Seminar on Identity and Self-Rule

Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) will organise a seminar focusing on indigenous Codava identity, self-rule, and constitutional safeguards on March 21, 2026, at Capitol Village in Kadagadal on the outskirts of Madikeri.

The event, scheduled at 10 a.m., aims to deliberate on key issues concerning the Codava community, including geo-political autonomy, preservation of language and cultural heritage, and the demand for a separate “code and column” for Codavas in the 2027 national population census. The seminar will also address the need for constitutional guarantees to protect hereditary lands and traditional practices, including the community’s sacramental gun culture.
Renowned scholar and former Member of Parliament Dr L Hanumanthaiah will attend as the chief guest. Eminent jurist Sri K P Balasubramanya will be the distinguished guest, while senior advocate Sri M T Nanaiah will participate as the guest of honour. Prof Dr Mullengada Revathi Poovaiah will serve as the resource person.

The programme coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The CNC stated that the event highlights concerns over “Codavaphobia” and seeks to promote awareness about the unique identity of the micro minority Codava community.
CNC Chairman N U Nachappa Codava is leading the initiative as part of the organisation’s continued advocacy efforts.
