Madikeri: Kodagu, usually known for its pleasant climate and lush green hills, is witnessing unusually high temperatures this season, with residents experiencing peak summer conditions much earlier than usual.
According to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the district recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C on Saturday and 35.4°C on Friday, marking one of the hottest spells of the season so far. Earlier in the week, temperatures in the district hovered between 33°C and 34°C, indicating a steady rise over the past few days.
The hill district, which typically enjoys relatively moderate weather compared to other parts of Karnataka, is now recording higher-than-normal temperatures, raising concerns among residents and farmers. Coffee growers and plantation workers say the heat is unusual for this time of the year, when Kodagu normally experiences milder conditions.
Weather experts attribute the rising temperatures to broader climatic changes. G. Srinivasa Reddy, former director of KSNDMC, said the effects of global warming are increasingly being felt across the State.“Since February, several parts of Karnataka, especially coastal regions, have witnessed above-normal temperatures,” he said.
Mr. Reddy warned that most regions of the State, barring a few taluks in the south interior, could experience temperatures 2°C to 4°C above normal this year. He added that the La Niña phase is gradually weakening, and El Niño conditions may emerge during the middle of the monsoon season, which could further influence temperature patterns and rainfall distribution.
Meanwhile, inflows into major reservoirs in the State remain low. As of Sunday, the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam recorded an inflow of 212 cusecs, reflecting the impact of the prolonged dry spell.
However, there may be slight relief in the coming days. According to KSNDMC forecasts, light rain or thundershowers are likely at one or two places in Kodagu district, along with parts of Hassan, Mysuru and Davanagere.
Meteorologists say these isolated showers could bring temporary respite from the heat, though dry weather conditions are expected to continue across several other districts in the State.
