Paddy Crop Damaged Across 2,120 Hectares in Kodagu Due to Rainfall Deficit
Madikeri: Lack of timely rainfall during the monsoon season has damaged paddy crops across 2,120 hectares in Kodagu, with the highest damage reported in Ponnampet and Virajpet taluks, Joint Director of Agriculture Chandrashekhar said.
Paddy crop damage has been reported across 650 hectares in Virajpet taluk and 1,470 hectares in Ponnampet taluk, taking the total paddy crop damage to 2,120 hectares. In addition, maize crops have been damaged across 159 hectares in Somwarpet taluk, taking the overall crop damage in the district to 2,279 hectares.
Chandrashekhar said the assessment was based on the absence of rainfall for three to four consecutive weeks, along with soil moisture levels and groundwater conditions. A report has been submitted to the government seeking approximately ₹1.93 crore in subsidies for the affected farmers.
He was speaking at a meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner S.J. Somashekhar on Saturday to review the availability of drinking water and fodder for livestock in the district.
Meanwhile, Bhaskar, Executive Engineer of the Jal Jeevan Mission division, said there would be no disruption to drinking water supply in Kodagu until December. He said the government has released ₹1 crore for each Assembly constituency for drinking water-related measures.
The Deputy Commissioner, referring to reports of drying water sources, directed officials to identify nearby high-yield and good-quality borewells as alternative sources for villages facing or likely to face drinking water shortages.
