New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised farmers for growing avocados alongside coffee plantations, saying the innovative practice is helping them tap into the fruit’s rising popularity and earn additional income.
In his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address on Sunday, Modi said avocados, once relatively little known and in limited demand, have now gained popularity among health-conscious consumers and premium markets, increasingly finding a place on dining tables.
“The avocado fruit is creating quite a buzz these days,” he said, noting that the crop was proving beneficial for farmers.
Modi specifically highlighted innovative farming practices in Chikkamagaluru, where some farmers are intercropping avocado with coffee and black pepper. He said the approach allows them to generate an additional source of income without disrupting their existing cultivation.
“We often hear about avocado toast in city restaurants, but through this very avocado, our innovative farmers have discovered a new recipe for earning,” Modi said.
He added that Indian farmers were benefiting from the growing demand for avocados. “The avocado from our own country has enhanced the taste of your toast while simultaneously boosting the farmers’ income,” he remarked.
