Kodava Family Hockey Festival: Muddanda Family Launches Official Website

Since its inception with the Pandanda Cup in Karada in 1997, the Kodava Family Hockey Festival has grown into a landmark event, promoting Kodava culture and athletic spirit.

Madikeri: The celebrated Kodava Family Hockey Festival, a symbol of unity and tradition in Kodagu, is set to mark its silver jubilee in 2025. As the host for this milestone event, the Muddanda family has launched their official website, muddandahockeyfestival.in, in Madikeri on Friday to kickstart the preparations.

The launch event, held in Madikeri, saw the presence of Muddanda Rashin Subbaiah, President of the Muddanda Family Sports and Cultural Charitable Trust, along with M.B. Devaiah, Honorary President of the Trust, and other family members. The website will serve as a central platform for updates, schedules, and information related to the 2025 festival.

Since its inception with the Pandanda Cup in Karada in 1997, the Kodava Family Hockey Festival has grown into a landmark event, promoting Kodava culture and athletic spirit. The festival holds a Guinness World Record, achieved by the Kundyolanda Cup Hockey Festival in 2024, and it is also recognised in the Limca Book of Records. Despite interruptions due to natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to a four-year pause from 2019 to 2022, the festival made a strong comeback in 2023, hosted by the Appachettolanda family, followed by the Kundyolanda Cup in 2024.

The 25th edition of the tournament is scheduled to be held from March 28 to April 27, 2025, at Madikeri, marking the third time the event will be hosted in the district’s headquarters.

The previous occasions were the Biddanda Cup in 2005 and the Hanteyanda Cup in 2016. This year, the festival grounds will once again be set up at Field Marshal Cariappa College, a venue traditionally associated with the event. The Muddanda family has formed a dedicated festival committee to ensure the event's success.

About the Muddanda Family:

According to the Muddanda family members, the family’s roots can be traced to Arameri village in Virajpet Taluk, which is believed to be their original homeland. Historical records and oral traditions suggest that the family migrated over 200 years ago to Bhakti, located in the northern part of Kodagu. This migration marked a new chapter in their history, and today, family members have established themselves in various regions, particularly around Madikeri city, Madhupura, and Surlabi in Somwarpet Taluk.

“Over the years, the Muddanda family has grown into a large and thriving community. With more than 100 nuclear families and approximately 400 members, they have made their presence felt not only in Kodagu but across the state and even internationally. Many members have ventured beyond Kodagu, with some settling in different parts of India, while others have established themselves in foreign countries. Despite their geographic spread, the family remains closely connected to their roots, and many of them still maintain strong ties with Kodagu, visiting regularly to stay involved in family traditions and local community activities,” stated in their website.
