Siddapura: The captivating beats of the Kodava valaga, a defining sonic identity of Kodava culture, are a staple at weddings and festivities. But have you ever wondered how these electrifying rhythms are brought to life? This year, the Coorg Shandy offers a rare opportunity to delve into the nuances of traditional drum-making, a craft central to these rhythms.

Nadikerianda Vikram Appaya, a celebrated drummer and artisan, will host a workshop on December 28, 2024, at Swarnamala, Siddapur. The workshop aims to showcase the intricate process of crafting traditional Kodava drums and rural instruments. Vikram, a passionate revivalist, goes to great lengths to preserve the authenticity of these instruments, sourcing seasoned goat skin and precise timber to ensure the perfect note in every beat.

“Vikram is reviving the sonic identity of the Kodavas through his craft,” say the organisers. “Despite the influx of cheaper plastic Chinese drums, he remains committed to maintaining the cultural and musical heritage of the Kodava people.”

The workshop, priced at ₹ 500, offers two slots: 10 a.m.–11 a.m. and 1 p.m.–2 p.m. Participants will gain hands-on experience in drum-making and an appreciation for this vanishing art.

Instruments crafted during the workshop will be available for purchase at the Coorg Shandy on December 29. For registration, visit [https://tinyurl.com/vwz5ndta](https://tinyurl.com/vwz5ndta).
