Kodagu to Host First State-Level Athletics Championship for Deaf Students

The championship is expected to bring together over 300 Deaf students from 16 districts across Karnataka.

Gonikoppal: Gonikoppal in South Kodagu will play host to the first Karnataka State Inter-School Athletics Championship of the Deaf on September 19. The event, organised by the Kodagu District Deaf Association (KDDA) in collaboration with the Karnataka Sports Federation of the Deaf and the Karnataka State Deaf Welfare Association, will be held at the KALS School Stadium from 9 a.m. onwards.

The championship is expected to bring together over 300 Deaf students from 16 districts across Karnataka, marking a significant step in promoting inclusivity and nurturing sporting talent among children with hearing disabilities.

Announcing the event, Gowroo M. Somanna, President of KDDA, said, “This is a major step toward empowering Deaf youth through sport.” She added that the competition would not only showcase athletic ability but also encourage confidence, leadership, and participation in mainstream activities.

Organisers emphasised that academic priorities remain central and expressed gratitude to schools and parents for supporting the initiative. They highlighted that such platforms give children opportunities beyond the classroom while still respecting educational commitments.

The KALS School management has extended strong support by providing the stadium for the event and arranging free lunch for all participants, a gesture welcomed warmly by the organisers.

Students will compete in a range of athletic events, with the committee ensuring medals, mementos, and recognition for all participants. The KDDA has also appealed for sponsorships from individuals, businesses, and organisations to strengthen efforts in building an inclusive sporting culture.

The championship reflects a broader movement towards inclusivity in sports in Karnataka. While traditional school athletics meets focus on competition, this event seeks to break barriers for the Deaf community by giving young athletes a platform to express their talent and spirit.
