Madikeri/Bengaluru: As the deadline for the installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) for vehicles draws near, Kodagu residents are encountering difficulties in affixing them.

Many residents are upset because they have to travel far to get their number plates put on. The problem is that there are no authorized shops or dealers in the district allowed to install the special plates, said residents.

Praveen Mudappa, a resident of Madikeri, mentioned, "Those of us who own scooters bought before 2019 have to spend more than Rs 500 to get HSRP. Additionally, apart from the plate costs, we have to travel to Mysuru to get them installed because there are no authorized HSRP vendors in Kodagu."

Vintage vehicles encountering problems:

The district, recognized as a top tourist destination in the country for its scenic hills, boasts vintage jeeps, SUVs, and various vehicles, all registered prior to 2019. Unfortunately, the installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) is not possible in this district, as it does not qualify for the home delivery option of HSRP.

Manjunath Kumar, a automobile shop owner in Madikeri said, "We can solely assist clients in registering for the HSRP online. Subsequently, numerous clients have traveled to Sulia, Mangaluru in Dakshina Kannada district, Mysuru and other locations beyond the district to have the HSRP installed on their vehicles."

Deadline:

As the February 17 deadline for installing HSRP on all vehicles approaches, people in the district are actively securing the installation of HSRP number plates.

In August 2023, the Karnataka transport department issued a notification requiring the installation of HSRP on approximately two crore vehicles registered before April 1, 2019 in Karnataka, with an initial deadline set for November 17, 2023. Due to a low installation rate, the department extended the deadline to February 17.

The notification, issued on August 17, outlines that owners who do not adhere to this regulation will incur fines ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000.

What are HSRP number plates?

According to the transport department, HSRP is a new form of number plate that is tamper proof and has non reusable locks. This means once a number plate is fixed, it can only be removed by breaking the lock, which is not easy to replace.

“All the HSRP plates will have a similar font and design, having a Chakra on the left side in blue colour. The rest of the plate colour is decided based on the vehicle type, for example white background with black numbers if for private vehicles. There's also "INDIA" hot stamped on the number plate,” the order stated.
