Madikeri: In a rigorous enforcement drive addressing the hazardous use of high-beam headlights at night, Kodagu traffic police have booked 193 cases in just one week. From July 1 to July 7, officers intensified their efforts to curb the dangerous practice, responding to numerous complaints from residents and commuters.
The crackdown is part of a statewide initiative that has seen Karnataka police register a total of 8,244 cases during the same period, with 3,354 of those in Bengaluru alone.
Karnataka's Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Road Safety), Alok Kumar, highlighted the significance of the campaign in a recent post on social media platform X. "Karnataka is the first state to have gone for a massive crackdown against vehicles with high beam LED headlights. 8,244 cases booked in one week. Kudos to our officers & men. Appreciate the law-abiding citizens using legally permitted headlights & keeping our roads safe," Kumar wrote, commending both the police force and compliant drivers.
The dangers of high-beam LED headlights are well-documented, especially on India's often poorly lit and congested roads. These headlights, while beneficial for visibility in certain conditions, can pose significant risks when used improperly.
High-beam lights can temporarily blind oncoming drivers, leading to increased chances of accidents. They also make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, contributing to road mishaps and fatalities. In a country where road safety is already a critical issue, the misuse of high-beam headlights exacerbates the problem, making stringent enforcement and public awareness essential.
