Madikeri: Police in Kodagu have arrested three persons, including two women, in connection with a honeytrap and dacoity case reported from Madikeri, officials said on Saturday. Three other accused are still at large, and further investigation is under way.

According to the police, the case came to light following a complaint by Mahadeva H.P., a businessman from Madikeri, who alleged that he was lured, assaulted, confined and threatened by a group after coming into contact with one of the accused through social media.

Investigators said Mahadeva had become acquainted with a woman identified as Rachana through Facebook, following which the two began exchanging messages. During the course of their interaction, Rachana reportedly sought financial assistance citing personal reasons, and Mahadeva transferred ₹5,000 on two occasions through a digital payment platform. When he later asked for the money to be returned, she allegedly suggested meeting him and offered sexual favours, proposing to meet either in Mysuru or Kushalnagar.

On December 12, Rachana allegedly invited Mahadeva to her residence in Madikeri, where he arrived around 10.30 p.m. While the two were inside the house, Rachana’s mother, Malathi, reportedly arrived along with a man identified as Dinesh. Police said Dinesh assured the women that he would resolve the issue and asked Mahadeva to leave. He later summoned two more men, Sujeet and Darshan, to the spot.

The complainant alleged that the three men assaulted him using their hands, sticks and scissors, causing injuries. He was allegedly wrongfully confined, stripped, and a nude video was recorded. The accused are also said to have seized his mobile phone and threatened him with an air gun, demanding ₹50 lakh and warning that the video would be circulated online if he failed to comply.

Mahadeva further stated that he was held captive until morning and that his blood-stained clothes were burnt inside the house. He later managed to escape and approach the police.

Madikeri Town police have registered a case under sections relating to dacoity, wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing hurt, and are continuing efforts to trace the remaining accused.
