HASSAN/MADIKERI: A Kodagu man accused of throwing an egg at Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his visit to Kodagu in August 2022 was found murdered in a forest area in Sakleshpura taluk, Hassan district. The victim, identified as Sampath, also known as Shambhu, had been missing since April 9. His body was discovered after a four-day search by the Yeslur police, according to reports.
According to a report in TOI, Sampath had borrowed a car from a friend in Kushalnagar, Kodagu district, before disappearing. The vehicle, stained with blood, was found abandoned near Kallahalli village in Yeslur hobli on May 10. A driver who had brought workers to a nearby coffee estate noticed the suspicious vehicle and alerted locals, who then informed the police.
A team led by the circle inspector and sub-inspector, along with a dog squad and forensic experts, carried out a thorough investigation at the scene. Police confirmed that the car belonged to a businessman in Kushalnagar and had been taken by Sampath on the day he went missing.
Efforts to trace him through mobile records and enquiries with individuals he had previous conflicts with yielded no immediate results. A missing person complaint had been filed at the Kushalnagar police station, and search operations were intensified.
Investigators suspect that the murder took place elsewhere, and the body was later transported to the forested region of Malnad, where it was dumped. A senior officer confirmed that Sampath was killed and his body disposed of in the Hassan forest area. The remains have been sent to the Kodagu district hospital for post-mortem examination.
Sampath was accused in a case related to throwing eggs at the convoy of then Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah on August 18, according to media reports.
While both the BJP and Congress have denied any association with him, Sampath’s social media profiles feature photographs of him participating in political events organised by the BJP, Congress, and JD(S). According to a report by TNIE, he had also actively taken part in Hindutva programmes organised by the RSS, VHP, and other Hindu outfits.
