PERIYAPATNA/PONNAMPET: Two students from the same engineering college in Kodagu district have died by suicide within a span of two days, raising serious concerns about student mental health.

The latest incident involves Yashwanth (20), a native of Periyapatna, in Muysuru district who was pursuing his first year at Coorg Institute of Technology in Halligattu, Ponnampet. He reportedly died by suicide by at his home in Periyapatna on Friday, according to a report published in Public Tv.

This incident occurred just two days after the death of another student, Tejaswini (19) from Raichur, who also died by suicide in the same hostel. A first-year student at the Coorg Institute of Technology, Tejaswini was enrolled in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning programme.

As reported by India Today, a suicide note was found in her room in which she allegedly cited academic pressure as the reason for taking the extreme step. She reportedly mentioned having six backlogs and expressed her unwillingness to continue her studies.

Tejaswini was the only daughter of Mahantappa, a resident of Raichur in northeastern Karnataka. According to a Times of India report, she had celebrated her birthday with friends on Monday. On Wednesday, she distributed sweets on campus for those who couldn’t attend the earlier celebration.

Police said Tejaswini returned to her hostel room around 4 p.m. After about 30 minutes, a classmate found the room locked from the inside. Despite several attempts to reach her through knocks and phone calls, there was no response. The matter was then reported to the hostel staff. When the door was forcibly opened, Tejaswini was found unresponsive inside. The suicide note referencing academic stress was recovered nearby.
