Karnataka High Court Panel to Examine Feasibility of Permanent Bench in Kodagu-Madikeri
Bengaluru: The Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka has constituted a three-member committee to examine the feasibility of establishing a Circuit Bench or Permanent Bench of the High Court in the State’s coastal or Malnad region, including Kodagu-Madikeri.
According to a notification issued by the Registrar General of the High Court on Tuesday, the committee comprises Justices Anu Sivaraman, S.G. Pandit and Mohammad Nawaz.
The committee has been tasked with examining the feasibility of establishing a Circuit Bench/Permanent Bench at Mangaluru/Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu-Madikeri, Hassan, Davanagere and Uttara Kannada. It will consult stakeholders and submit a report on the matter.
The development could revive discussions over the long-standing demand for a High Court Bench closer to the coastal and Malnad districts, including Kodagu. Advocates and other stakeholders have for years highlighted the time, travel and financial burden involved in travelling to Bengaluru for High Court proceedings, The Hindu reported.
The demand has been particularly prominent in coastal Karnataka, with the Mangaluru Bar Association and the Coastal High Court Bench Agitation Committee campaigning for a Bench in the region. Authorities have reportedly indicated that a 50,000 sq ft facility at the old Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mangaluru could be made available for the purpose.
