Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday decided to partially reject the findings of the Keshav Narayana Commission, which investigated the alleged suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) M.K. Ganapathy in 2016. Instead, it endorsed the recommendations made by retired Director-General of Police (DGP) M.K. Srivastava, IPS.
The single-member panel, led by retired judge Keshav Narayana, had pointed to lapses in the investigation and suggested action against certain officers. However, it had also cleared former Home Minister K.J. George and senior IPS officers A.M. Prasad and Pranav Mohanty, whose names Ganapathy had mentioned in a video interview prior to his death.
Briefing the media, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil said Mr. Srivastava’s report concluded that there was no justification to act against the officers as proposed by the Keshav Narayana Commission. He explained that both the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court had accepted the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) report, which had closed the case.
“Since the CBI’s closure report was upheld by the Supreme Court in the Special Leave Petition, there is no reason to proceed with any departmental inquiry,” Mr. Patil stated.
On June 17, 2016, DySP Ganapathy died by suicide in a lodge at Madikeri, Kodagu. Prior to his death, he recorded a statement naming then Home Minister K.J. George along with two IPS officers. The incident triggered widespread controversy, eventually leading the State government to transfer the investigation to the CBI.
In 2019, the CBI exonerated George, Prasad, and Mohanty of any role in Ganapathy’s death.
