Madikeri: Kodagu district has received a major infrastructure boost with the Centre sanctioning ₹22 crore under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for the improvement of three important State highways.
Announcing the approval on Wednesday, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar said the funding would strengthen road connectivity in different parts of Somwarpet, Madikeri and Virajpet taluks. The projects are expected to benefit local residents, students, farmers, traders and the large number of tourists who visit the district every year.
Expressing gratitude to the Union government, Mr. Wadiyar thanked Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for approving the proposal and addressing long-pending demands for better road infrastructure in Kodagu.
According to the sanctioned plan, the largest share of the allocation, amounting to ₹10 crore, has been set aside for the upgradation of selected stretches of the Madikeri-Kutta State Highway (SH-89). A further ₹6 crore has been earmarked for the improvement of the Kodlipet-Hebbale Road (SH-244) in Somwarpet taluk, while another ₹6 crore will be utilised for upgrading portions of the Talacauvery Road (SH-90) in Virajpet taluk.
Officials said the SH-244 project will cover stretches between 16.70 km and 30 km, improving connectivity to villages such as Gopalapura, Banavara Hebbale, Mullur and Malambi. Works on SH-89 will be undertaken at identified locations along the highway, while the Talacauvery Road project will focus on stretches between 51 km and 61 km.
Mr. Wadiyar said the proposed works would enhance road safety, reduce travel difficulties and improve the overall efficiency of transportation across the district. He noted that better road networks would also facilitate the movement of agricultural commodities, support tourism-related activities and contribute to the growth of local businesses.
Kodagu, one of Karnataka's leading tourist destinations and a key producer of coffee and spices, has witnessed sustained public demand for improved road infrastructure in recent years. Several stretches identified under the latest sanction have long been awaiting repair and modernisation.
The MP said he would continue to pursue additional infrastructure projects and investments for the Mysuru-Kodagu constituency to accelerate development and improve public amenities across the region.
