Bengaluru: The Karnataka health department has taken a decisive step to safeguard public health by prohibiting the use of artificial colors in chicken kebabs, fish, and vegetarian dishes across the state.

This action was prompted by the discovery of unsafe levels of sunset yellow and carmoisine in several kebab samples.

A total of 39 kebab samples from different parts of the state were tested, revealing that seven samples contained sunset yellow, while one had both sunset yellow and carmoisine. In response, the health department issued an order on June 21 citing the serious health risks posed by such additives, as stipulated in the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products, Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011.

Violations of these regulations can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment ranging from seven years to life and fines up to Rs 10 lakh, according to the order.

This move follows a similar ban imposed in March on the use of artificial colors in items like Gobi Manchurian and cotton candy, after carcinogenic chemicals were detected in the colors used in these foods.
