Bengaluru: Supreme Court advocate and former Congress spokesperson Brijesh Kalappa rejoined the Congress party on Sunday, 16 February in the presence of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Kalappa, a native of Kodagu, had quit the Congress in 2022 after serving as its national spokesperson and later joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). However, he has now returned to the grand old party.
Announcing his homecoming on social media platform X, Kalappa wrote, “Home is not a place... it’s a feeling. Homecoming today in the presence of President PCC and Deputy Chief Minister Shri D.K. Shivakumar. CM Siddaramaiah explained to me that he couldn't make it since he had a knee injury. Working President G.C. Chandrashekar MP was present.”
Kalappa first joined the Congress in 1997 and actively represented the party on Hindi, English, and Kannada news channels, particularly during the UPA years from 2013 until his resignation in 2022. He was also among the ticket aspirants from the Congress for the Madikeri or Virajpet Assembly constituency in Kodagu district.
Expressing gratitude to senior Congress leaders for facilitating his return, Kalappa stated on X, “My profound thanks to Smt Sonia Gandhi, Shri Rahul Gandhi, Smt Priyanka Gandhi and Shri Mallikarjuna Kharge as well as the Leadership of the Karnataka State Congress for facilitating my readmission to the Grand Old Party.”
In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Kalappa contested from the Chickpet constituency in Bengaluru as an AAP candidate but faced defeat. With his return to Congress, his political future in the party remains to be seen.
