Madikeri: After a prolonged dry spell, the heavens have opened up over Kodagu district, bringing much-needed relief to its parched lands and water bodies. The district, known for its picturesque landscapes and coffee plantations, had been reeling under the effects of a severe drought, with the Cauvery River, a lifeline for the region, almost coming to a standstill.
However, the recent spell of heavy rains has completely changed the scenario. Water has accumulated in the river, which had dried up due to the scorching sun, and the Cauvery River has come alive again, bringing hope to the farmers and residents of the district.
Last year's monsoon was unusually harsh, leading to an unprecedented fall in groundwater levels across the district. Lakes, and dams were completely dry, and the flow of the Cauvery River had stopped in many parts of the district.
The current rainfall has been a blessing for the entire district, including areas like Talakaveri, Bhagamandal, Napoklu, Madikeri, Siddapur, Virajpet and Kushalanagar. Water is accumulating in the previously dry lake banks, replenishing the groundwater reserves.
According to the latest data, the district has received 150.74 mm of rainfall since January to May first week, compared to 112.72 mm during the same period last year. Madikeri taluk has received 206.31 mm of rain, Virajpet taluk 92.45 mm, Ponnampet taluk 133.80 mm, Somwarpet taluk 113.05 mm, and Kushalanagar taluk 208.10 mm during the same period.
“The revival of the Cauvery River and the increase in rainfall bode well for the district's agriculture, especially for the coffee growers who have been facing hardships due to the drought. The rains have also brought relief to the residents, who had been facing water scarcity for several months.
As the district continues to receive rainfall, the administration is keeping a close watch on the situation to ensure that there are no untoward incidents due to flooding or landslides, according to officials.
