Kodagu Restricts Entry to Rivers, Waterfalls and Other Vulnerable Areas Amid Intensifying Monsoon

Madikeri: With the southwest monsoon intensifying, the Kodagu district administration has prohibited unauthorised entry into rivers, waterfalls, reservoirs and other vulnerable locations across the district as a precautionary safety measure.

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), headed by Deputy Commissioner Somashekar S.J., issued the order on Monday by invoking powers under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The directive aims to regulate public access to disaster-prone areas and minimise the risk of accidents during the monsoon season.

Issued under Section 34(c) of the Disaster Management Act, the order authorises authorities to restrict entry into vulnerable locations. It also refers to relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Under the restrictions, members of the public are prohibited from entering rivers, streams, waterfalls, reservoirs, backwaters and other water bodies for bathing or swimming. Adventure sports and other recreational activities at hazardous locations have also been banned until further notice.

The district administration has directed the police, forest and revenue departments, local bodies, the Tourism Department, Fire and Emergency Services, and other concerned agencies to strictly enforce the order and prevent unauthorised access.

Kodagu, one of Karnataka's most rain-prone districts, has experienced floods and landslides during previous monsoon seasons. The administration said the restrictions have been imposed to safeguard lives and reduce the risk of monsoon-related incidents.
