MADIKERI: Coffee prices continued to hold steady this week across major varieties traded in Karnataka, India’s largest coffee-producing state. As of Monday, April 7, Robusta Parchment was priced between ₹21,400 and ₹21,800 per 50 kg bag, while Robusta Cherry traded between ₹12,000 and ₹12,950. Arabica Parchment fetched between ₹26,200 and ₹26,800, and Arabica Cherry ranged from ₹15,300 to ₹17,000. Meanwhile, black pepper, another key crop in the region, was priced at ₹735 per kg.
Karnataka accounts for over 70% of India’s coffee production, with Kodagu (Coorg) being the largest contributor, followed by Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts. These hilly regions are known for their ideal agro-climatic conditions — including high rainfall, elevation, and rich soil — which are crucial for cultivating high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans.

Kodagu alone contributes nearly 40% of India’s coffee output, predominantly Robusta. Coffee cultivation in the region is typically carried out on family-run estates and is intercropped with pepper, cardamom, and areca nut. The combination of coffee and pepper cultivation forms the backbone of Kodagu’s agrarian economy, supporting thousands of growers.
Arabica, known for its flavour and acidity, is generally cultivated at higher altitudes, while Robusta is hardier and grows well in lower elevations. The harvesting season for Arabica typically ends by January, while Robusta harvesting extends till March. Pepper harvesting usually follows, with peak arrivals from April onwards.
While market rates this week have not shown significant fluctuations, growers continue to keep a close eye on both domestic demand and international cues, especially given the role of global prices, weather patterns, and shipping logistics in shaping returns.
