Madikeri: In a fervent plea for the recognition and preservation of their cultural identity, the Codava National Council (CNC) has announced plans to observe the United Nations International Mother Language Day on 21st February 2024. The event, scheduled to take place from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the vicinity of the District Commissioner's Office in Madikeri, will highlight the importance of Codava Thakk, the mother tongue of the indigenous Codava people.

Under the theme "Multilingual education is a pillar of Intergenerational learning," as designated by UNESCO for the International Mother Language Day celebration 2024, the CNC emphasizes the sacred nature of mother language, drawing parallels with Mother Earth, Mother River, and Mother Nature in the lives of the indigenous Codava people.

The CNC's manifesto articulates a set of crucial demands, including the inclusion of Codava Thakk in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, elevating it to the status of an official language alongside Konkani. Additionally, the council advocates for the establishment of a Codava Thakk Bench at esteemed international universities and language research institutions.

They seek the recognition of Codava folklore in the intangible Cultural Heritage list of UNESCO and the safeguarding of the unique Codava gun culture through constitutional provisions akin to the protection afforded to the Kirpan of Sikhs. Furthermore, the CNC passionately calls for the advocacy of Codavaland Geo-Political Autonomy under Article 244 R/W 6th & 8th Schedule, aiming for the comprehensive empowerment of the Codava linguistic race. These demands reflect the CNC's commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage and identity of the indigenous Codava people.

N U Naachappa, President of CNC, assured that the entire program would be peaceful, urging authorities to address their demands in the interest of justice and equity. The CNC's efforts reflect a larger global movement to recognize and preserve linguistic diversity as a vital aspect of cultural heritage.
