Madikeri: In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Codava National Council (CNC) highlighted their demands on the occasion of the United Nations' "International Mother Language Day" observed on February 21.
CNC, headed by President N U Nachappa Codava, organized a Satyagraha on the same day in the vicinity of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Madikeri. The primary focus was on pressurizing the authorities to include Codava Thakk (Codava Language) in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution and to recognize it as one of the languages of the United Nations.
The memorandum outlined CNC's legitimate demands, including the recognition of Codava Thakk in the Constitution, its inclusion in the curriculum, the establishment of a Codavology bench in various universities, and the protection of Codava tribal rights. The CNC also urged the government to ensure the representation of Codava culture in global platforms like UNESCO.
The CNC emphasized the importance of Codava Thakk in preserving the cultural heritage of the Codava tribe and requested its inclusion in language labs of the Army and police departments. They asserted that the intentional failure of successive governments to protect Codava Thakk and the Codava Tribe would not be tolerated.
President N U Nachappa Codava said, "Mother tongue is the soul of life, and Codava Thakk is an integral part of our identity. We urge the government to take immediate steps to safeguard our language, culture, and tribal rights."
The CNC's demands also extended to the declaration of Codava tribal festivals as state holidays, the restoration of historical place names, and the protection of hereditary untitled lands of the Codava Race.
The memorandum concluded with a call for the implementation of these demands, expressing hope that the government recognizes and acts upon the significance of Codava Thakk and the cultural heritage of the Codava tribe.
