CNC Pays Tribute to Codava Warriors of Anglo-Mysore War at Historic Lakdikote

MADIKERI: Volunteers of the Codava National Council (CNC), led by Chairman N.U. Nachappa Codava, paid solemn tribute at the historic Lakdikote site in Murkal, honouring the valiant Codava warriors who resisted the Mysore Sultanate during the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the 18th century.

The commemorative event, marked by traditional oblation rituals, highlighted the bravery and sacrifice of the Codavas — an indigenous mono-ethnological warrior clan of Coorg, also known as Codavaland. The CNC volunteers also visited the Paalthop-Paalthod site near Nanachi-Kutta, another significant battlefield of the Anglo-Mysore conflict, to offer prayers and homage.

“These rituals are not just acts of remembrance but reaffirm our community’s legacy and continuing struggle,” said Nachappa. The Codavas, known for their martial spirit, had received military support from the British East India Company and resisted Mysore’s expansion under Tipu Sultan using guerrilla tactics, he added.

Reiterating its long-standing demands, the CNC called for geo-political autonomy for Codavaland, Scheduled Tribe status for Codavas, recognition as an indigenous people by the United Nations, and special representation in legislative bodies.

The event was attended by CNC members including Jammada Mohan, Kandera Suresh, Ajjikuttira Lokesh, Madrira Karumbaiah, and others. The CNC emphasised that such tributes serve as reminders of Codava heritage and their continued quest for recognition and rights.
