Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday assured that the long-pending demand to name a Bengaluru metro station after Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa would be taken up for discussion in the state Cabinet.
He made the announcement at a felicitation ceremony hosted by Kodava Samaja Bengaluru at the Kodava Samudaya Bhavana in Vasanthnagar. The event honoured Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for allocating land to the community organisation in the city.
For the past few years, the Kodava community has been urging the state government and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) to name one of the metro stations after Field Marshal Cariappa, as a mark of respect to one of India’s most celebrated military leaders.
In July 2024, members of Kodava Samaja formally submitted a request to BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao, proposing the naming of a metro station in honour of Cariappa, who was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

Born in 1899 in Shanivarsanthe, Kodagu, Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa played a key role in shaping post-independence India’s armed forces. He was one of the two Indian officers to reach the highest rank of Field Marshal, the other being Sam Manekshaw. Cariappa led Indian forces in the 1947–48 Kashmir war against Pakistan and later served as High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand.
Hailing from the Kodava community, known for its deep ties with the Indian armed forces, Field Marshal Cariappa remains an enduring symbol of patriotism and discipline.
