Madikeri: A 27-year-old woman from Bengaluru died under suspected circumstances of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a gas geyser leak while on a weekend trip to Kodagu with her colleagues on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Vinutha, a native of Mysuru who was working in Bengaluru. She had travelled to Kodagu along with 14 colleagues for a two-day outing and was staying at a homestay in the Kalkanduru area near Madikeri.
According to the police, Vinutha's colleagues became concerned after she spent an unusually long time in the bathroom. When they checked on her, they found her unconscious inside. She was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.
A police officer said the exact cause of death would be known only after the post-mortem examination. However, preliminary findings suggest that Vinutha may have suffocated after inhaling carbon monoxide leaking from a gas geyser installed in the bathroom.
“We are awaiting the post-mortem report. Prima facie, it appears that she inhaled carbon monoxide emitted from a gas geyser. The bathroom reportedly had inadequate ventilation, which may have worsened the situation,” the officer said.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas produced during incomplete combustion of fuel. In enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, exposure to the gas can quickly become fatal as victims may not realise they are inhaling it.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with gas geysers. In February this year, a Bengaluru-based driver, Raju (48), died due to a suspected gas geyser leak. In December last year, a 26-year-old woman, Chandini, and her four-year-old daughter Yuvi Kiran lost their lives in a similar incident. Earlier, in October 2021, MBA graduate Vigneshwari Eshwaran died after inhaling carbon monoxide emitted from a gas geyser at a Kodagu homestay.
According to Karnataka Police data, more than 50 people have died due to gas geyser-related incidents in and around Bengaluru since 2019, while the death toll across the State has crossed 100 during the same period.
