Madikeri: An undertrial prisoner who sustained critical injuries in a clash with a fellow inmate inside the Kodagu District Prison on Monday succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at K.R. Hospital in Mysuru on Tuesday night.
According to prison sources, the incident occurred on Monday morning when an altercation broke out between Rajesh, a resident of Srimangala in Ponnampet taluk who has been lodged in the prison for nearly two years, and Hemanth, who was recently admitted to the jail.
What began as a verbal argument reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation. During the fight, Rajesh allegedly attacked Hemanth with a sharp weapon, inflicting severe injuries. Prison authorities rushed Hemanth to a hospital in Mysuru for advanced treatment, where he later died.
Rajesh, who also sustained injuries during the clash, was admitted to the District Hospital in Madikeri for treatment.
Sources said both inmates were undertrial prisoners and had been lodged in the prison in connection with separate murder and attempt-to-murder cases. Authorities are yet to ascertain whether there was any prior enmity between the two prisoners that may have led to the incident.
The Madikeri Rural Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the prison clash and the death of the inmate.
