Virajpet: Palangala village in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district witnessed a tragic incident in the early hours of Tuesday when a wild elephant fell into an under-construction ring well, leading to its agonizing death.
The mishap occurred shortly after midnight, with the elephant plunging nearly 20 feet. Its hind portion struck the ground first, causing it to sink further by an additional 6 to 8 feet before succumbing to its injuries.
Forest Department officials received the distress call around 2 a.m. Despite their arrival, they found it impossible to rescue the tusker, which had become partially buried in the well. The animal was covered with debris, leaving only its face, trunk, and a small part of its back visible, according to N.H. Jagannath, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Virajpet.
"The situation was dire," Jagannath stated. "The tusker was already deeply embedded in the ground and covered with debris, making rescue efforts futile."
Given the circumstances, a veterinary officer was lowered into the well to conduct a post-mortem examination. Extracting the carcass without causing significant damage to the surrounding agricultural land proved impossible. Consequently, the elephant, estimated to be around 18 to 20 years old, was given a burial by filling the well with mud.
