Village Panchayat in Kodagu issues notice to chop trees, concerns rise as tree protection authority advocates removal

On February 3, the PDO issued a notice to Dr. Chinnappa, instructing him to cut down all the trees; otherwise, legal action would be initiated.

Gonikoppal: The Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) in Hathur village Grama Panchayath, located in Kodagu district, has allegedly served a notice to Dr. Ammanda Chinnappa, a resident of Kaikeri near Gonikoppal, for planting trees in the vicinity of his residence.

While tree planting is actively promoted by authorities nationwide, in Kodagu, the local authorities are paradoxically asking the removal of trees that Dr. Chinnappa has been cultivated for the past few years.

Alleged Copy of notice issued by PDO

On February 3, the PDO issued a notice to Dr. Chinnappa, instructing him to cut down all the trees; otherwise, legal action would be initiated. This has sparked a public debate questioning whether the Panchayat is genuinely committed to environmental protection and tree preservation. Dr. Chinnappa expresses dissatisfaction with the PDO's alleged insistence on removing valuable trees that have contributed to the local environment by providing shade and creating a positive atmosphere.

“Encouraging tree growth is a nationwide effort for environmental protection, but Hathur Panchayat is posing a legal threat. Despite our efforts to plant and nurture trees on the roadside opposite our house, the Panchayat has issued a notice to cut them down. We planted these trees to enhance the greenery and provide shade around our home. Today, the Hathur Panchayat claims the plants obstruct passers-by and motorists and has issued a legal action notice. Please refer to the attached photo, showcasing the ample road space and the planted area on the right side,” Dr Chinnappa said.

“It is disheartening that the Panchayat didn't inspect the site. Isn't it a form of intimidation to receive a legal notice without proper inspection or direct communication? Shouldn't we strive to foster green spaces, support birds, and preserve our trees?,” he questioned.
