Kutta: A United States national has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by staff at a homestay in Kutta, located in Karnataka’s Kodagu district, prompting the arrest of two persons, including the homestay owner.
According to the police, the incident is said to have occurred last week but came to light only after the survivor alerted officials at the United States Embassy following her departure from the property. Acting on the complaint forwarded by the Embassy, the Kodagu police registered a case at the Kutta Police Station and launched an investigation.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that her drinks had been laced with intoxicants before she was assaulted. She further accused the homestay owner of attempting to suppress the incident and failing to assist her in approaching the police. The complaint also stated that the accused had blocked the Wi-Fi connection at the property, allegedly to prevent her from contacting authorities or escalating the matter.
The survivor reportedly remained at the homestay for three days after the incident before managing to leave, citing a visit to Mysuru. After reaching safety, she contacted officials at the United States Embassy, who then facilitated communication with local authorities in Kodagu.
The police have since arrested the prime accused, an employee of the homestay and a native of Jharkhand. The homestay owner has also been taken into custody for allegedly withholding assistance and attempting to cover up the crime. Both accused have been remanded to judicial custody.
Kodagu Superintendent of Police Bindu Mani R.N. confirmed that a case of sexual assault has been registered. “Two accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. The case is currently under investigation,” she said, adding that further details cannot be disclosed at this stage.
Meanwhile, N.S. Boseraju, Minister for Minor Irrigation, Science and Technology and district in-charge of Kodagu, has ordered a prompt and comprehensive probe into the incident. In a statement, he said he had spoken to the district police chief to obtain details.
Highlighting Kodagu’s global reputation as a tourism destination, the Minister noted that such incidents could adversely affect the district’s image and tourism sector. He directed officials to ensure a fair and impartial investigation and to take stringent action against those found guilty.
The investigation is ongoing.
