Napoklu: The Forest Department has temporarily banned trekking activities at the popular Tadiandamol hill range in Kodagu district, citing safety concerns during the ongoing monsoon season.
In a press release, the Deputy Conservator of Forests, Madikeri division, stated that the decision was taken to avert potential loss of life and prevent damage to the fragile ecosystem and infrastructure. The ban will remain in effect until the end of the monsoon.
Tadiandamol, the highest peak in Kodagu and the third tallest in Karnataka, rises to an elevation of about 1,748 metres above sea level. It is a major attraction for nature lovers and adventure seekers, drawing trekkers from across the region. Located in the Western Ghats, the hill is known for its lush greenery, dense shola forests, and panoramic views.
The forest official noted that incessant rainfall and strong winds have increased the risk of falling trees and landslides along the trekking paths. Additionally, thick mist and poor visibility during this season could lead to trekkers losing their way. The release also warned of increased wild animal movement in the area, which could pose further risks to visitors.
Authorities have urged tourists and trekking groups to cooperate with the restrictions and avoid venturing into the forest trails until conditions improve. Regular patrols are being conducted to enforce the ban and ensure public safety.
Why visitors flock to Tadiandamol:
One of the key attractions near Tadiandamol is the historic Nalaknad Palace, built in the late 18th century. Constructed in the 1790s, the palace served as a refuge for Kodagu’s last ruler, Chikka Veera Rajendra, who sought shelter there during his conflict with the British.
Trekking from Nalaknad Palace to the summit of Tadiandamol, the tallest peak in Kodagu, is among the most sought-after adventure experiences in the region. The trekking trail stretches approximately 7 kilometres one way and is considered an ‘easy’ route suitable for beginners. Most visitors complete the trek within a single day.
However, camping on the peak is strictly prohibited, and trekkers are required to descend before nightfall. Along the trail, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding Shola forests, rolling hills, and deep valleys, making it a memorable experience for nature enthusiasts and photography lovers alike.
