Mysuru: In a historic electoral debut, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the young scion of Mysuru’s erstwhile royal family, triumphed in the Lok Sabha elections from Mysuru. At 32 years old, Yaduveer secured a decisive victory over Congress candidate M. Lakshman by a substantial margin of 1,39,262 votes, maintaining the BJP’s dominance in the constituency for a third consecutive term.
Yaduveer’s electoral journey began with a strong lead from the initial round, culminating in his victory with 7,95,503 votes against Lakshman’s 6,56,241 after 25 rounds of counting. The elections, held on April 26, spanned across six Assembly segments in Mysuru district and two in Kodagu district.
Yaduveer’s candidature marked a significant return for the Mysuru royal family to active politics after a two-decade hiatus, succeeding Prathap Simha, the BJP’s previous victor in 2014 and 2019. The royal family had been politically inactive since Yaduveer’s grand uncle, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, a four-time MP, lost in the 2004 elections.
This victory is seen as a setback for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, for whom Mysuru is a significant stronghold, despite his native village Siddaramanahundi being part of the Varuna Assembly segment in the Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Yaduveer’s win is noteworthy as he, a political newcomer, not only surpassed the victory margin of his predecessor Pratap Simha but also overcame skepticism about his alignment with the BJP. His grand uncle had faced defeat as a BJP candidate in 1989, making Yaduveer’s victory particularly significant.
BJP MLA Srivatsa attributed Yaduveer’s success to the enduring respect for the royal family in Mysuru. Yaduveer himself credited the achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past decade and the strategic alliance with JD(S) for the electoral win.
Post-victory, Yaduveer expressed his commitment to driving development in Mysuru while preserving its rich heritage. Despite the BJP securing only one of the eight Assembly segments within the Mysuru Lok Sabha constituency in the 2023 State Assembly elections, the alliance with JD(S) and strong local support played crucial roles in his triumph.
