Kodagu Consumer Commission Orders KSRTC to Pay ₹13,000 for Faulty AC Bus Service

Madikeri: The Kodagu District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) to pay compensation of ₹13,000 to a passenger after finding deficiency in service due to the failure of the air-conditioning system in a bus during a journey from Madikeri to Bengaluru.

According to the complaint, Sachith K.H., a resident of Biligeri village in Madikeri taluk, travelled on November 6, 2025, in KSRTC’s EV Power Plus air-conditioned bus service. He alleged that the bus’s air-conditioning system malfunctioned during the journey, causing considerable discomfort and breathing difficulties.

Mr. Sachith stated that despite informing the bus conductor about the issue, no corrective action was taken. He further pointed out that the bus did not have windows that could be opened, which worsened the situation for passengers travelling inside the vehicle.

Following the incident, he approached the Kodagu District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission seeking compensation for the inconvenience and hardship suffered during the trip.

After examining the matter, the commission observed that passengers travelling in air-conditioned buses pay a higher fare, including taxes, specifically for the AC facility. The commission held that if the air-conditioning system fails after a passenger has purchased a ticket, it becomes the responsibility of the transport corporation to provide an alternative arrangement, such as facilitating onward travel in another air-conditioned bus from the Mysuru bus stand.

The commission, comprising acting president Renukamba C. and member Gourammanni, directed KSRTC to pay a total compensation of ₹13,000 along with interest at 9% per annum.
