Siddapura: A government school teacher had a narrow escape after coming face-to-face with a wild elephant while on Karnataka's ongoing Social and Educational Survey duty near Maldare in Kodagu district on Tuesday.
The teacher, identified as Shivaram from the Government High School in Gonikoppa, was travelling to a tribal settlement in Avaregunda, near Maldare in Virajpet taluk, to carry out a socio-educational survey when the incident occurred.
According to reports, Shivaram was riding his motorcycle along the Basavanahalli–Dubare stretch when a wild elephant suddenly appeared on the road and charged towards him. In a desperate attempt to flee, he accelerated his bike but lost control after hitting a pothole on the slippery road, leading to a fall. He sustained injuries to his leg in the mishap.
Despite the fall, Shivaram managed to get up and run for safety as the elephant turned back into the forest. Locals rushed to his aid, and he was later treated for minor injuries at the Community Health Centre in Siddapura. His condition is reported to be stable.
Meanwhile, the ongoing Social and Educational Survey across Karnataka has recorded 77.86% progress in Kodagu district. To ensure the smooth completion of the State-wide exercise, government schools have been granted an extended holiday period so that teachers and enumerators can focus on data collection.
Survey teams are visiting every identified household to collect accurate demographic and educational information. The district administration has also encouraged residents to participate independently by submitting their details through the State’s online self-declaration portal: https://kscbcselfdeclaration.karnataka.gov.in/
