Balele: A capacity building training programme focusing on best agricultural practices for sustainable coffee cultivation will be held on April 23, at the Gram Panchayath Bhavan in Balele, Kodagu district.

The event, which begins at 10.30 a.m., is jointly organised by the Coffee Board of India and Sucden Coffee India Private Limited under the Coffee Development Plan (CDP).

“The initiative aims to empower coffee growers from the Kodagu region with scientific knowledge and sustainable techniques to improve crop health and productivity. The technical session will cover a range of topics relevant to current challenges in coffee cultivation,” said Mukharib D S, Junior Liaison Officer, Coffee board of India.

Key areas of focus include soil health management to ensure long-term coffee sustainability, integrated pest and disease management, and post-planting care. Experts will also provide guidance on conserving soil moisture and improving irrigation practices.

Organisers said the training will benefit small and medium-scale coffee growers who are looking to adopt environmentally sustainable methods while maintaining or increasing their yield.

Kodagu, known for producing some of India's finest coffee, has been grappling with the impacts of climate change, erratic rainfall, and pest outbreaks in recent years. Programmes like this are seen as crucial in helping farmers adapt to changing conditions and protect the long-term viability of their plantations.

The Coffee Development Plan is a flagship initiative of the Coffee Board of India, aimed at strengthening the coffee sector through targeted interventions and collaborative efforts with private stakeholders. Growers from across the region are encouraged to attend the session and benefit from the latest agricultural insights and practical demonstrations, said officials.
