Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday appealed to the Kodava community to continue supporting the Congress government, saying several initiatives have been taken to honour their contributions.

“Our government has launched many programmes for you. We’ve allotted land to those who served in the armed forces. We’ve appointed Kodavas to the Rajya Sabha and made three or four of your leaders MLAs and MLCs. We’ve taken decisions to ensure your voice is heard in politics. Recognising this history, we ask you to stand with us,” he said.

Speaking at a felicitation programme organised by the Kodava Samaja in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the Kodava community had made significant contributions to the country not just in politics but also in sports, the judiciary, and the armed forces. “Kodagu and the Kodavas are like an ornament to the nation. Just as gems enhance the beauty of a person, your presence has enriched India,” he said.

Highlighting the government’s decision to allot seven acres of land to the community in Bengaluru, he said the financial concessions given for the land were minor when compared to the community’s long-standing discipline, sacrifice and patriotism. “We must not allow our traditions and culture to fade. Your dedication is greater than any financial value,” he noted.

Shivakumar also reaffirmed the Congress government’s commitment to inclusive governance. “We are building programmes based on equality and fairness. Our aim is to uplift the marginalised and backward communities,” he said.

He urged the Kodava Samaja to back its elected representatives, including MLAs A.S. Ponnanna and Manthar Gowda. “We stand with you. In return, you must stand with us and strengthen our hands,” he concluded.
