Special ‘Simha Masa Aradhana’ Observed at Igguthappa Temple in Kodagu

The ‘Simha Masa Aradhana’ was conducted at the temple premises on Monday, with the temple management organising a series of traditional services.

Kakkabe: On the occasion of the Kail Poldh festival, a important festival for the Kodava community, the Paadi Igguthappa Temple in Kakkabe hosted a special ‘Simha Masa Aradhana’ ceremony. The Igguthappa Temple, one of the most revered religious sites in Kodagu, became the focal point for many devotees who gathered to partake in the rituals.

The ‘Simha Masa Aradhana’ was conducted at the temple premises on Monday, with the temple management organising a series of traditional services. The ceremonies included the Tulabhara Seva, where devotees were weighed against a chosen commodity as an offering. In addition, the temple also conducted the Sri Satyanarayana Swami Pooja, a Maha Pooja, and an annadana, where food was served to all the devotees in attendance, management of the temple stated.

These rituals were carried out in conjunction with the celebration of Kail Poldh, which took place on Tuesday, August 27. Kail Poldh, a festival deeply rooted in Kodava culture, is marked by the community's reverence for their weapons. This celebration comes at the conclusion of the challenging paddy transplantation season, a significant period for the agrarian community of Kodagu. During the festival, Kodavas take great care in cleaning and worshipping their weapons, acknowledging the protection these arms have provided them over the past year.

The Paadi Igguthappa Temple, perched atop a hill in a forested area of Kakkabe, holds a rich history. According to local legend, Lord Igguthappa is one of seven divine siblings who chose Kodagu as his home.

The temple is a crucial site for the Kodava people, with Lord Igguthappa being regarded as a benevolent deity who grants the wishes of his devotees. The name "Igguthappa" itself is symbolic, with “Iggu” meaning grain and “thappa” meaning give, reflecting the deity’s role as a provider.
