Kakkabe: The people of Nalnad in Kodagu district are preparing to celebrate Kail Poldh, the traditional festival of arms, on Tuesday, August 27. The date has been determined by astrologers from the Padi Sri Igguthappa temple in Kakkabe, one of the most revered religious sites in the region.
According to temple astrologer Shashikumar and the Nanaiah family, the weapon worship ritual should be performed precisely at 5:30 p.m. on August 27. While this date is specifically set for the Nalnad region, other areas of Kodagu will observe Kail Poldh on September 3, as per local customs.
Kodagu, also known as Coorg, is renowned for its coffee and is home to the Kodavas, a martial hill tribe with a rich history deeply intertwined with weapons. Historically, the Kodavas were skilled guerrilla fighters who initially defended their territories using locally made bows and arrows. With the introduction of firearms, guns became a central aspect of Kodava culture. In fact, weapons hold such significance that major life events, such as births and deaths within the community, are marked with the firing of guns.
Kail Poldh is a time when the Kodavas celebrate their enduring connection with their weapons. The festival signifies the end of the arduous paddy transplantation season for the agrarian community. During Kail Poldh, Kodavas meticulously clean and worship their weapons as a way of expressing gratitude for the protection these arms have provided throughout the year.
