Madikeri: The robusta coffee market in Kodagu district witnessed a sudden downturn after experiencing a prolonged period of high prices, leaving coffee growers in distress. The price of robusta coffee, which had soared to Rs 400 per kilogram in recent days, has now reduced to Rs 330, shocking farmers who were anticipating further increases.

The abrupt decline in prices has sent ripples of concern throughout the district, particularly among coffee growers who had hoped for sustained profitability in the coming days. Traders report that the price of a 50-kilogram bag of coffee has seen a significant drop from Rs 10,500 to Rs 8,500, exacerbating the worries of farmers who had banked on higher returns.

"This sudden downturn in prices has caught us off guard," lamented a local coffee grower, Biddappa AP echoing the sentiments of many in the district. "We were expecting the prices to remain stable or even rise further, but this sharp decrease has left us uncertain about the future,” he added.

The situation has created a divide among growers, with those who had already sold their coffee feeling relieved, while others who had held onto their produce in anticipation of better prices now find themselves in a state of confusion.
